Although Chicago born, Potter relocated with his parents to Columbia where he developed contacts within the local jazz community playing his first professional gig (as an alto player) at the tender age of 13. In his late teens he went on to complete his studies in New York at the Manhattan School of Music and soon built a reputation as a first class player performing alongside legendary jazz trumpeter Robert Chudnic (known to jazz fans as Red Rodney).

His spell as a sideman with Red Rodney raised Potter's profile bringing his distinctive style of playing to the attention of fellow musicians and jazz enthusiasts. With over 15 albums as a band leader to his credit, not to mention over 150 recordings as a sideman, Potter is now a world famous jazz musician collaborating with artists such as Steely Dan, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Adam Rogers and Dave Holland.

In 2016 he was the featured soloist on the critically acclaimed album 'Vital Frequences' by the Ben Patterson Jazz Orchestra.
