Born in San Antonio in 1963, Duarte began playing guitar at eight years old. At sixteen he moved to Austin to pursue a music career full-time, experimenting in various styles of jazz in the vein of his influences Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
By 1994 Duarte had signed to Silvertone Records, through which he released his album Texas Sugar/Strat Magik. The following year he won Guitar Player’s Best New Talent Award and was ranked fourth by the magazine in the Best Blues Guitarist list behind B.B. King, Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton.
Duarte generally tours with the power trio he formed with John Jordan and Jeff Hodges called the Chris Duarte Group. He has also performed with high-profile artists like Omar & The Howlers, Indigenous and Bobby Mack. Duarte has received rave reviews in particular for his album Lucky 13, earning praise for the album’s mix of slow blues with elements from jazz and psychedelic rock.
