She has also earned a reputation as a composer and also has adapted classical songs to video games soundtracks.
Chen began studying piano at an early age under Jane Smisor Bastien and Lori Bastien Vickers. She picked up the organ at the age of 15 under Leslie Robb. She later studied under United States Naval Academy chapel organist Monte Maxwell. She then attended Juilliard, studying under John Weaver and later Paul Jacobs. She received her bachelor’s in 2005 and master’s degree in 2006.

In 2007, she was accepted by the Artist Diploma program at Yale University.
Chen has performed a wide variety of genres and debuted fellow Juilliard composers’ works, as well as her own. Some of the awards she has won include the John Erskine Prize for scholastic and artistic distinction. She won the Region IX regional convention of the American Guild of Organists. Her first CD was recorded at Heinz Chapel in Pittsburgh, Pa., and released in 2005.
