It was founded by two music lovers, Maude Winthrop Gibbon and Martha Laurens Patterson, in the year 1936. The orchestra held its first concert, which Tony Hadgi conducted, in December of that year at the Dock Street Theatre. The orchestra relocated to the Memminger Auditorium and then relocated again in the 1980s to Gaillard Municipal Auditorium now named the Gaillard Center.

David Stahl served as music director for the orchestra. Stahl served from 1984 until his death in October of 2010, making him the longest director to serve the group. Following Stahl's death, Yuriy Bekker took over to serve as the orchestra's acting artistic director. Bekker served from 2010 to 2014. After Bekker Ken Lam became the music director. In that time, the orchestra has performed concerts that revolved around the wild west with numbers from Cowboys and Oklahoma, but classics like Beethoven and Holiday favorites.
