The band came together in Landgraaf in 2003, taking their name from the term for “Iron Jaws” in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional language of Elvish. In The Lord of the Rings novels, Carach Angren is the name for a fort in the hellish landscape of Mordor. They released their debut EP The Chase Vault Tragedy in 2004, which tells the story of mysterious, self-moving coffins. By 2007 Carach Angren had been signed to Maddening Media, through which they released their critically acclaimed debut LP Lammendam.
Carach Angren set off on their first significant series of tours in 2010 to support their album Death Came Through a Phantom Ship. That year they would perform alongside high-profile acts like Zonaria, Dark Funeral and Nefarium. The band has developed a reputation for its haunting themes, sophisticated musicianship and literary lyricism.
