Car Seat Headrest began as a solo recording project of Toledo originally entitled Nervous Young Men. The new name came from Toledo recording his vocals in the backseat of his car for extra privacy. Toledo began making music in 2010 and continued releasing solo efforts until the band truly formed around the end of 2014.
Car Seat Headrest's sound can be described as lo-fi and takes influence from bands like Nirvana, Modest Mouse, and The Kinks. They signed with Matador Records in 2015 and released the album, Teens of Style, finally stepping outside of exclusively Bandcamp releases. A year later, Teens of Denial was released in May 2016, boosting Car Seat Headrest’s popularity.
