They are known for their integration of musical elements from genres such as heavy metal, Southern rock and sludge, and even occasionally tour as the Black Sabbath tribute band Bat Sabbath. 

Cancer Bats was formed in 2004 when founding members Scott Middleton and Liam Cormier came together with a vision of making music that blends disparate influences like Black Flag, Entombed and Led Zeppelin. They completed their lineup soon afterward to record an impressive demo that saw the band signed to Distort Entertainment in 2005. The following year they released their debut album Birthing the Giant, which met with rave reviews and led to tours alongside high-profile acts like Rise Against and Every Time I Die. 

Cancer Bats released their sophomore album Hail Destroyer in 2008, which featured numerous guest appearances from a slew of notable punk and metal bands.
