Born in Obregon, Sonora in 1986, the artist began playing the drums at a young age. He then learned to play the guitar as a teenager, during which time he encountered the work of his influences Bob Marley and Sublime. As a young man, he took the stage name Caloncho in honor of his childhood nickname.
Castro released his debut EP Homeotermo in 2011, which saw him collaborate with producer Siddhartha. Castro and Siddhartha would go on to collaborate extensively together over the course of the rest of the singer’s career. In the years that followed, Castro made waves due to his unique musical style that blends sounds from nature with Mexican folk music and reggae beats. In the mid-2010s, the artist earned a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.
