He would go on to write comedy material for Midler’s Broadway show Clams on the Half Shell and co-write her 1980 film Divine Madness. After making the move to Los Angeles, Vilanch continued expanding his credits, writing for The Donny & Marie Show and 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special. He became further known for appearing, as well co-writing, on the television game show Hollywood Squares.
