Breabach was formed at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow in 2005. Henderson and MacCrimmon met at the conservatory while studying vocals and string instruments, and decided to form a band with a vision of playing traditional Scottish folk music. Henderson also plays in the band Salsa Celtica and has made appearances at prominent Celtic music festivals such as Celtic Connections and Celtic Colours. MacCrimmon previously earned acclaim as the director of The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland.
Breabach released their debut album The Big Spree in 2007, though would not rise to fame until the early 2010s. In 2011, they earned a nomination for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Group. The following year, Breabach won the Scots Trad Music Awards for Live Act of the Year and Scottish Folk Band of the Year.
