Wayne and Nelson Braxton found a shared love of music after joining the school band in elementary school. They continued to perform well into their teenage years when they performed regularly as members of the California All-State Honor Band. Wayne went on to study at Cal State Northridge, where he performed in the school’s famed Jazz A Band. Nelson went on to study the tuba at San Francisco State University, where he toured widely across Europe with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.
In the years that followed the brothers collaborated in a jazz quartet, and briefly performed as part of the Disney All-American Collegiate Band. As professionals, the pair worked with Najee and Sheila E., then debuted as the Braxton Brothers with the release of Steppin’ Out in 1996.
