Tovey became the principal conductor for Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet in 1984 before accepting one of his most notable positions as the music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, where he served between 1989 and 2001. During his time at this post, he was instrumental in establishing the city’s annual New Music Festival. Tovey has guest conducted for a number of the world's most renowned orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
