Founded in 1987 by lead singer and guitarist Bobby Houck and bassist Hank Futch, the two had been life-long friends, knowing each other since they were both children in Florence, South Carolina. Eventually, the two began playing music together in college, starting off as a simple acoustic-centered act that specialized in bluegrass and country covers. But as the group evolved and recruited a rotating ensemble of supporting musicians, so did their music. Becoming a fusion of bluegrass, country, rock and soul, Houch, Futch and their crew became a living musical testament to the rich South Carolinian musical tradition as Blue Dogs tickets became a must-have for any fan of Southern music.

For the first few years of the band’s existence, they would accrue a vibrant local following, first attracting the attention of college students in both of the Carolinas, and then securing gigs throughout the Southeast US. Finally, by 1991 they came out with their first-ever album, Music for Dog People, which they released on their own Black River label. They continued to increase their following, releasing a total of three albums between 1991 and 1995. However, it was their fourth album that would truly begin to define the band’s musical identity.

Up until this point, all of their releases were simply covers of other material. Their 1997 album, Blue Dogs, would be their first with entirely original music, channeling their brand as a Southern-rock band. Produced by renowned record producer John Alagia, the album went on to become Millennium Music’s single best-selling CD of 1997, while foreshadowing the great success that was still to come for this exciting Americana outfit.
