The band has a famously eclectic style, blending in other styles, such as folk, bluegrass, Cajun and mariachi, into their music. 

Williams was raised listening to jump blues that his parents played. He played with some neo-rockabilly bands before creating the three-piece band Big Sandy & the Fly-Rite Boys in 1988. The group recorded two albums as Big Sandy & the Fly-Rite Trio.
