Bombara first played the piano in Grand Rapids when she was in grammar school. She picked up guitar right before high school and made that her primary instrument. In high school, she created the punk band Green Means Go, which she played with until 2005. She studied at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids as well as Greenville College in Greenville, Ill., studying culture and music.

She accepted an Artist Residency at the Contemporary Music Center in 2006, which is where she met Crain and joined her band, touring with them until late in the year 2007. She partnered with her husband and brother-in-law to record Beth Bombara and the Robotic Foundation in 2009. It also was critically praised. Her first album, Wish I Were You, was released in 2010.
