Bernstein’s family received a piano when he was ten years old. He began to teach himself piano and music theory and soon asked for formal lessons. He attended Harvard University and studied music and wrote his first composition there in 1935, entitled Psalm 148 before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts cum laude.

In 1943, he made his debut as assistant conductor to the New York Philharmonic on short notice. The performance, done without rehearsal, propelled Bernstein to instant fame. From there he conducted professionally for several years, making his first television appearance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 1949.
In the 1950s, Bernstein began to compose theatrical works, the first being Peter Pan in 1950. Over the next few years, other groundbreaking and immensely popular musicals that he created include West Side Story, a retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Along with musical theater, he would go on to compose symphonies and other works, earning multiple Emmy Awards, Tony Awards and Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.
