Originally from Lexington, Ky., Sollee was introduced to cello in the fourth grade. From the first time he heard the instrument, he loved it. He continued to study music at the University of Louisville’s School of Music and studied under musician Paul York. Throughout his studies, Sollee struggled with the idea that the cello was solely a classical instrument and started experimenting with different sounds and techniques the instrument could produce.
In school, he was a part of the Sparrow Quartet group, who became the first American ensemble to be allowed to enter Tibet and perform shows there. He has toured throughout the United States both as part of the Sparrow Quartet and individually. Ben Sollee has performed at several festivals like Bonnaroo, SXSW Festival and Austin City Limits Music Festival. He has also collaborated with various ballet companies, composing scores for their performances.
