Kekaula and Vennum formed the Bellrays in Riverside in 1990 out of the ashes of their previous group The Rosethorns. After filling out their lineup, the Bellrays released their debut album In the Light of the Sun in 1993. Tony Fate produced the album, joining the band as their guitarist three years later.
One of the Bellrays’ more successful albums, The Red, White & Black, was released through the Alternative Tentacles record label in 2003. The album saw the band establish their signature, avant-garde sound and develop a reputation for defying convention.
The Bellrays’ funk-infused style of rock and roll has enjoyed success in video games and on television, with their songs used in games like Driv3r and during the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
