Growing up, he played the organ, clarinet, cello and piano while enrolled in grammar school at Methodist College Belfast. He began studying with Felicitas LeWinter (who learned from Emil von Sauer). He moved to London, England, and took four years of lessons with John Barstow because beginning private lessons with Maria Curcio. By the time he was twenty, Douglas had won multiple awards, including taking the bronze medal at Texas’ Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and winning second place at the Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition held in Spain. In 1986, he became the first non-Russian piano player to win the gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition since Van Cliburn won it in the late 1950s. Douglas has a large library of recordings, including his debut Pictures at an Exhibition, five piano concertos by Beethoven and the Triple Concerto featuring Kim Chee-yun and Andres Diaz. Douglas has recorded for RCA Victor Red Seal and Satirino France. He has served as the Artistic Director of Manchester, England’s International Piano Festival and the Clandebove Festival in Clandebove, Bangor. The 2002 New Year Honours List named Douglas Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to music.
The Royal College of Music, where it serves as a Visiting Prince Consort Professor of Piano, awarded him a fellowship. He has received honorary doctorate degrees in music from Queens University Belfast and the National University of Ireland. He performed at the University Concert Hall’s inaugural Awakening Limerick Concert Series, which was live-streamed. He has performed with several orchestras, including the St Petersburg Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony and Russian National.
