The Baroque period was a time of great creativity and innovation, with the creation of common-practice tonality. This type of harmony has continued to be used for centuries by both Western classical musicians as well as popular artists such as Beethoven, who were inspired by them in their own work. A bass continuo group typically accompanied baroque concertos while other instruments—the viol, cello and double bass played the low-register melody.
