The original line-up was formed in 2005 by Colin Brooks on guitar with Ed Jurdi on drums then they added Gordy Quist to round out the bunch. When they first hit the scene, their live recordings brought them national attention. The band was voted "Best New Band" at Austin's 2007 Music Awards and released an acclaimed CD/DVD combo of their performance called Live at Antone's.
The band's self-titled album went to No. 1 on the Americana Music Association's radio charts and was ranked 8th for 2008, which featured producer Ray Wylie Hubbard and collaborations with such talent as Patty Griffin among others. They were nominated for the "New Emerging Artist" award at the Americana Music Honors and Awards in 2009, followed up by another nomination for "Best Duo/Group of the Year" in 2010.

After six years of much success, Colin Brooks announced that he was leaving the band to embark on a solo career after they saw the release of their fifth album Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster's Son. A tribute album was released in late 2016, Highway Prayer: A Tribute to Adam Carroll, featuring The Band of Heathens' version of "Oklahoma Gypsy Shuffler."
