Ballet Hawaii was established in 1976 as “Friends of the Ballet.” Initially, it served as the support group to the Honolulu City Ballet whose first Artistic Director was Jim Hutchison. Its mission is to teach, present, promote and produce dance in Hawaii. Among Ballet Hawaii's notable performances include full-length productions of The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Alice (In Wonderland) and an annual performance of The Nutcracker. Commissioned works presented at Ballet Hawaii include Urashima Taro and The Unanswered Question by Tau Dance Theatre's Peter Espiritu. Hawaii’s youth have the opportunity to dance with leading professionals from American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and others. Past and recent Ballet Hawaii guest artists include Robbie Fairchild, Sara Mearns, Steven Heathcote, and Megan Fairchild. For over 40 years, Ballet Hawaii has offered programs that enrich the cultural climate in the community and provide audiences with high-quality dance performances.
