Christopher Wheeldon, an England native, began his ballet training when he was eight years old at the East Coker Ballet School. At the age of 11, Wheeldon enrolled at The Royal Ballet School where he trained until 18. He joined the Royal Ballet in 1991, where he danced in works by Ashton, MacMillan and Balanchine. In 1993, Wheeldon was invited to join the New York City Ballet’s corps de ballet. As a dancer with New York City Ballet, Wheeldon appeared in many featured roles such as George Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15, The Four Temperaments, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Nutcracker and Jerome Robbins’ The Concert, Dances at a Gathering. Wheeldon retired at the end of the Spring 2000 season and then devoted himself to choreography. When Christopher Wheeldon was selected as the first Artist in Residence for the New York City Ballet, he created Polyphonia. The work was set to music by Györgi Ligeti. His 2002 premiere of Morphoses also drew on his aesthetic, with music from Ligeti. Wheeldon then created Carnival of the Animals, a collaborative effort with John Lithgow and Camille Saint-Saens’ music.
