The group was founded in 1988 by Todd Thomas and Baba Oje, who had previously met as students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
After years refining their sound, Arrested Development released their debut album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days In the Life Of…, which was the number one choice in both the Village Voice and The Wire’s Critic’s Poll. The release earned Arrested Development the Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group and Best New Artist. They were the first-ever rap group to win Best New Artist.
In the years that followed the ensemble contributed to the soundtrack for Spike Lee’s biopic Malcolm X, as well as performed alongside high-profile artists like The Black Eyed Peas, The Jackson 5 and De La Soul. In 2019 they received the Black Music Honors Award for their contributions to the history of African-American music.
