The Sun Devils women’s gymnastics program’s inaugural year was 1976, under inaugural head coach Monique Sublette. The team finished 9-2 in their first season, and won the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Regionals championship in their first year, qualifying to compete in the AIAW National Championships. ASU would end up finishing in sixth place in their championship debut. The team became competing in conference play in 1980, winning the team’s first conference championship in 1982.

The team has had two two-time NCAA Champions, including Jackie Brummer on unbalanced beam in 1984 and then winning again in 1986, repeating as champion in 1986 in balance beam and also winning in the all-around.

The team has had 29 athletes winning All-American honors. In addition, there have been more than five conference champions in the program including Tina Brinkman, who won conference championships on the vault, floor exercise and unbalanced beams. She also scored a perfect 10.0 in the floor exercise in 1992 and 1993.
