He was both an important pioneer for African-American musicians, as well as internationally acclaimed on solo and chamber stages alike before coming to New York City where he served with distinction at first by playing principal clarinet positions with one of America’s most renowned orchestras - The New York Philharmonic. When he performed at the inaugural concert for President Barack Obama, violinist Itzhak Perlman said that they were honored to take part in such a historic event. He also made an appearance with other celebrated musicians from around the world like Yo-Yo Ma and Gabriela Montero.

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, McGill previously served as a principal clarinet in both Cincinnati and Metropolitan Opera orchestras. In-demand as an instructor due to his extensive experience with top ensembles across many genres (including jazz) he currently teaches at Juilliard School for Arts & Sciences and Curtis Institute of Music where he is also chairperson on the winds instruction committee. With an appearance as a featured soloist at the Kennedy Center, he performed works by Copland and Mozart. He further plans to collaborate with other orchestras including those in Jacksonville and San Antonio Texas. Additional collaborations include programs led by Gloria Chien, Demarre McGill, Michael McHale, Anna Polonsky, Arnaud Sussman and the Pacifica Quartet.
