He has also been known by the nickname "El niño de Tras Talleres.” The music he sings is the genre of salsa and bolero. Montañez originally sang with the group El Gran Combo group, with which they recorded and released more than 35 full-length albums containing hit Latin songs such as "Un verano en N.Y," "El barbero loco," "Julia" and "Ponme el alcolado, Juana.” Montanez was with that group for almost 15 years. After he left El Gran Combo, Montanez joined La Dimension Latina from Venezuela. He also gained success performing with his own band.
Montañez won his first Latin Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Album, together with Pablo Milanés. Over his long career, Andy Montanez has toured multiple times across the United States and Latin America. He has appeared at venues such as Congas Bar and Grill in Duluth, Georgia, the House of Blues in Orlando, Fla., and the Charles F. Dodge City Center Pembrooke Pines in Pembrooke Pines, Fla.
