AIC began its varsity program in 1948, playing a limited number of games for the first dozen years. The program has grown since then playing nearly three dozen games per year and facing off with fellow New England teams through the ECAC Hockey League.
AIC won its first Atlantic Hockey crown in 1994 and, after claiming its first conference title in Division I play, advanced to its first NCAA Tournament. AIC faced top-seeded St. Cloud State in the first round and defeated them 5-4 despite being outshot 34-13 in the game. Eric Lang, an AIC alumnus and former graduate assistant, took the reins in 2016. He led the team to regular-season conference titles in consecutive seasons starting in 2018-19. The Yellow Jackets were also conference tournament champions in 2018-19 and 2020-21. Lang earned Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year honors in 2019 and 2020.
