Alex Cuba is the stage name for Alexis Puentes, a guitarist and singer-songwriter known primarily for his albums Humo de Tabaco and Agua del Pozo. Born in 1974 in Artemisa, Cuba to a musical family, Puentes began learning guitar at the age of six. He grew interested in jazz fusion styles as a young man, moving to British Columbia with his brother to form the Puentes Brothers duo. Their 2001 release Morumba Cubana earned a nod for the Juno Award for Best Global Album.
Puentes set off on a solo career in 2004, releasing his debut solo album Humo de Tabaco later that year. Both Humo de Tabaco and Puentes’ sophomore album Agua del Pozo won Juno Awards for World Music Album of the Year. In 2010 the singer-songwriter won the Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and in 2015 his album Healer earned both a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Pop Album and won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Singer-Songwriter Album.
