Puentes was born on March 29, 1974, in Artemisa, Cuba. He picked up the guitar when he was six years old. He started to experiment with jazz fusion as an adult. After marrying a Canadian, he moved to Canada in 1999. With his twin Adonis, Puentes formed the Puentes Brothers duo. They were nominated for Best Global Album at the Juno Awards in 2001 for Morumba Cubana.
