The University of Alaska Fairbanks' Nanooks men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program. The Nanooks are an independent club, who plays at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
In the early years, varsity hockey for Alaska-Fairbanks State University (AFU) was quite uncommon. The program began in 1925 with four games and a 3–1–0 record despite having no coach. The program resumed in 1932 and for three more seasons, the club was without a coach as an independent collegiate group. In 1937, the Nanooks were captained by Alfred Bastress, who served as their first head coach. For four seasons, Bastress directed the Nanooks. The squad played its 1939–40 season without a coach, with Joe Gerlach coaching for part of the 1941–42 season. The program was paused during World War II and restarted for the 1949–50 season.

In the summer of 2011, the Big Ten Conference announced intentions to start sponsoring men's ice hockey in 2013, with Miami announcing the formation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference for 2013 with five other schools leaving the WCHA. On July 20, 2011, the league realigned, with Northern Michigan joining the WCHA for the 2013–2014 season. On August 23, 2011, representatives from the WCHA and CCHA met in Chicago, Illinois to discuss realignment in college hockey. The WCHA invited the five CCHA schools that had not yet been invited to join. The Nanooks accepted their invitation to join the CCHA for the 2013–14 season.
