Gilbert credits Otto-Werner Mueller, a German-born conductor, with motivating and inspiring him to pursue his musical passions. 

Altogether, the graceful conductor with strength, stamina and an undeniably powerful stage presence, has won several awards including the 1994 Georg Solti Prize. After winning, he took private lessons with Maestro Solti and was awarded the International Competition for Musical Performance later that same year.
