Gilbert grew up on the west side of Manhattan, N.Y., where he attended the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. As an adolescent, Gilbert studied the piano, viola and violin. Upon graduating from Harvard, Gilbert honed his craft at conducting under the tutelage of professors at the Curtis Institute of Music as well as the Julliard School of Music. Gilbert credits Otto-Werner Mueller, a German-born conductor, with motivating and inspiring him to pursue his musical passions.
Altogether, the graceful conductor with strength, stamina and an undeniably powerful stage presence, has won several awards including the 1994 Georg Solti Prize. After winning, he took private lessons with Maestro Solti and was awarded the International Competition for Musical Performance later that same year.
