As an independent team, they achieved the best run in their history, amassing nearly 40 wins by 1970 and appearing at the ‘68 Grantland Rice Bowl. The Zips made history as the first-ever team to be elevated from Division I-AA to Division I-A.
The Zips’ successes continued to multiply, and in 2005 the team won its first title at the Mid-American Conference Championship and appeared in the Motor City Bowl. One of the Zips’ best seasons came in 2014 when they finished the season ranked fourth among all MAC East Division teams.
