The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was founded in 1958 by Alvin Ailey and a group of young black modern dancers to perform at what Alvin Ailey refers to as “the station wagon tours.” The dance theater has performed with such stars as Duke Ellington and performed at prestigious venues like the White House and internationally in locales in Asia and Senegal.
Ailey II has been featured as being the first performer after the events of September 11 at the World Financial Center in lower Manhattan, dancing in the reconstructed Winter Garden. In 2003, the company performed at the annual Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival. In July of 2006, the troupe performed at the 97th annual NAACP Convention in Washington, D.C. It was in 2007, that Ailey II performed in their new home, selling out the Ailey Citigroup Theater in New York City for two weeks in its inaugural season.
