The performance was originally put on by the Negro Ensemble Company as an Off-Broadway production and ran for nearly two years. The original cast was complete with star actors, such as Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and Adolph Ceaser. Instantly, the play was a hit and won five awards. Among others, the original Off-Broadway production won the 1982 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play and Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play in the 1982 Outer Critics Circle Awards.
