The band first came together in 1980 with their name representing the slogan “54-40 of Fight!”. Based on a reference to president James K. Polk’s unsuccessful attempt to expand the US border. Original members included Neil Osborne (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Brad Merritt (bass) who met in high school in Tsawwassen, British Columbia. The band went through a few drummers before Matt Johnson took the permanent gig while Phil Comparelli would cover lead guitar until he was replaced by Dave Genn in 2005. 54-40 released its debut album Set the Fire in 1984 though they would start getting major notoriety with their self-titled sophomore release. The group would rise up the charts with each release finally going Platinum with their fifth album 1992s Dear Dear.
Since the band’s inception, 54-40 tickets have brought a wild on-stage performance that keeps fans jamming all night long. During the 80s the band’s hottest singles included songs like “I Go Blind” and “One Day in Your Life”. Despite finding success on college radio stations Warner/Reprise Records would drop the band in 1990. It didn’t take long for Sony to pick them up as the band set off on their most successful decade where every album they produced went Platinum or Gold including Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret and Trusted by Millions. In 2010 54-40 released The Green Album to commemorate the band’s 30 years in the industry. 54-40 continue to light up the stage around the country when Neil isn’t performing with his daughter in their family band A Family Curse.
