Case relocated to Vancouver, Canada to study at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, during which time she played drums with a number of local punk groups. This eventually gave way to Case taking part in the project The New Pornographers, which have been an indie-rock mainstay since the release of their first album in 2000. Though Case wrote a few songs that appeared on The New Pornographers’ debut effort, she was also busy writing songs for her own debut entitled The Virginian. Though the album leans country, Case’s voice and songwriting style incorporate elements of indie rock and Americana as well.
