In the mid-1960s, Clapton left the band the Yardbirds to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. A few years later Clapton formed the power trio Cream with Ginger Baker on the drums and bassist Jack Bruce. Clapton’s solo career began in the 1970s with influence drawn from the mellow style of J.J. Cale and reggae legend Bob Marley. Interestingly his version of Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” helped the reggae genre reach the mass public.
