Dierks was born as Frederick Dierks Bentley in Phoenix to Leon Fife Bentley and Catherine Childs. Bentley attended the University of Vermont for one year before transferring and graduating from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2003 Bentley signed with Capitol Nashville and released his self-titled debut album which went certified platinum in the U.S. In 2005 his Modern Day Drifter would also reach certified platinum status and his third album, Long Trip Alone (2006) is certified gold.

Dierks released a live DVD titled Live and Loud at the Fillmore and was filmed in Denver, Colorado.
