Bryne adapted American Utopia into a stage performance in 2019, which premiered at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre. A film version of the stage show was released on HBO in 2020. 

Aside from his prolific recording career, Bryne is also known for his theater and film work. In 1986, Byrne released the film True Stories, which he wrote, starred and directed. Bryne has created music for many film soundtracks including Lead Us Not into Temptation and The Last Emperor, in which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score and a Grammy Award for Soundtrack for Visual Media.
