Many of the school’s programs compete in the Mountain West Conference. There are three major rivalries that the Rams enter into with other schools.
The “Rocky Mountain Showdown” features football games against the University of Colorado. The game is frequently held at Empower Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos. Likewise, CSU takes on Air Force in football each year. The two schools compete for the Ram-Falcon Trophy. One of the oldest interstate rivalries in the United States belongs to Colorado State and Wyoming. Since 1899, the winner of the annual football game has been awarded the Bronze Boot. CSU football has been around since 1893. One of the most famous coaches in the school’s history is Sonny Lubick. He became the head coach in 1992 and led the Rams to a total of nine bowl game appearances. Colorado State beat Missouri in the 1997 Holiday Bowl. In Lubick’s final bowl appearance as head coach, the Rams lost to Navy in the 2005 Poinsettia Bowl. Before Coach Lubick took over, the Rams had been invited to only two bowl games in their entire history.
The Rams have enjoyed success on the basketball court, thanks in large part to the coaching of Jim Williams. From 1955 to 1981, Williams won 352 games with the Rams. Twice he led the Rams to upset wins over John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins. For the women’s team, star player Becky Hammon helped lead the Rams to the Sweet Sixteen in 1999. Hammon has had a successful coaching career, becoming the first full-time female coach while serving as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs.
