History of Cirque
Cirque du Soleil, French for “Circus of the Sun” or “Sun’s Circus,” began as a small circus troupe in the 1980s in Quebec, Canada. By 1990 the founders, Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix, had employed more performers and established their entertainment company and drew in enough profit to create even more productions. Cirque du Soleil’s popularity quickly grew and by the 2000s, the company had expanded to performing 19 shows in more than 300 cities across six continents.
Lailiberté and Ste-Croix had imagined and brought to life a traveling show experience that reflected the classic circus experience with some differences in being animal-free and focusing on making the performances more striking and dynamic by enhancing the costumes, lighting, and original music used.
