The two met in the ring for the first time in 2017 and that fight ended in a draw. Alvarez won the rematch in 2018 by a close and controversial decision. Though this bout comes four years later, there is no love lost between these two. Alvarez is now ESPN’s fourth-ranked pound-for-pound boxer and top at 168-pounds. Golovkin is No. 2 in the 160 division. In the September fight, the two will meet at 168 pounds.
Alvarez, who is considered the undisputed champion at super middleweight, has held the WBA, WBC, Ring magazine, IBF and WBO titles. He has an overall record on 57-2-2 with 39 knockouts. Since the second fight with GGG, Alvarez has won seven bouts and lost one. He is coming off a surprising loss to Dmitry Bolov. It was his first loss in nine years.
Golovkin, the Kazakhstani-born fighter, has also held several middleweight titles including Gold at the 2003 World Championships and the 2004 Asian Games. He carries a 42-1-1 record into the matchup with the man who handed him his only draw and only loss. He has four consecutive victories since the last Canelo fight. His last fight ended in a ninth-round knockout of Ryota Murata.

ESPN reported that the first fight between Canelo and GGG brought in more than $27 million which ranks as the third-largest gate in boxing history. The second totaled more than $23 million making this one of the most-watched rivalries of all time.
