Who is Pentatonix

Pentatonix, or PTX, is an American a cappella group based out of Arlington, Texas. The original five group members included Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, Kevin Olusola and Avi Kaplan. Kaplan left the group in 2017 and fellow bass, Matt Sallee took his spot. Hoying suggested the group’s name based on the pentatonic scale, a music scale with five notes.

Origins of Pentatonix

In 2011, the group auditioned for and won the third season of The Sing-Off, an NBC singing competition show. Riding the waves of success from its win, PTX signed with its first record label, but the deal fell through. PTX then began recording and posting performance videos on YouTube, which were distributed by Madison Gate Records.

The following year, Pentatonix debuted its studio album, PTX, Volume 1. Its 2013 album, PTX, Vol. II would take the top spot on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart. While these vocalists usually performed covers of popular music, PTX would release its own self-titled album full of original songs like “Can’t Sleep Love” and “Cheerleader” in 2015.

Christmas with Pentatonix

PTX has been committed to bringing a cappella covers of classic Christmas and holiday songs to the world. Some of the most popular recordings include “The Little Drummer Boy,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “Mary Did You Know?” Its first-holiday album, PTXmas (2012) was certified gold and reached No. 1 on the US Digital Albums chart at the time of its release.

Its 2014 holiday album, That’s Christmas To Me, contains a mix of classic holiday hits and original songs. This album would also earn them two Billboard Music Award Nominations in 2015. Adding to its nearly annual concert tours, PTX embarked on a fourth Christmas tour in 2022, appropriately titled Pentatonix: A Christmas Spectacular.

PTX Honors and Accolades

Throughout its career, Pentatonix has received many honors and awards, including three Grammy Awards in 2015 and 2016. In those years, they became the first a cappella group to win Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella. Its third Grammy award was for Best Country Duo/ Group Performance with Dolly Parton for her hit, “Jolene.” Since its creation in 2011, Pentatonix’s YouTube channel has more than 20 million subscribers.

With its success, PTX has performed at iconic venues such as the White House and events like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. While known for its amazing vocal arrangements, PTX also has some film credits, including a cameo in Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) as a competing team from Canada.

In Feb. 2023, Pentatonix was honored with its very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, joining the ranks of other stars like Snoop Dogg, Christina Aguilera, and P!nk
