It is the home of the George Brown College Theatre School as well as the Soulpepper Theatre Company, which is the largest not-for-profit theatre company in the city of Toronto.
Young Centre for the Performing Arts started out as a distillery way back in 1832, called Gooderham and Worts which was established by James Worts. This distillery quickly became the largest distillery in all of Canada and even one of the biggest in all of North America. Each year, it would produce almost a million gallons of proof spirits. The distillery was designed by David Roberts Jr., with its 19th-century Victorian-era industrial architecture. Fast forward to the year 2000, Paul Carder approached Albert Schultz to do a partnership to transform the old distillery into a modern-day performing arts center. The venue was named after the Michael Young Family Foundation after they donated $3 million to the project.
