It is the home turf of the Lamar Cardinals football team, who compete in the Western Athletic Conference of the NCAA Division I FCS.
Originally called Cardinal Stadium, the Provost Umphrey Stadium opened in 1964 with a construction cost of $1 million. The stadium was named after the Provost Umphrey law firm that donated $3 million for stadium renovations. The Cardinals played there until 1989 when the team was dissolved. After that, the stadium was used for the Ozen High School football games as well as Lamar's soccer team. The stadium was then renovated in 2009 to make it ADA compliant, and the football team was reborn. The surface of the field is made of Hellas Matrix turf.
