The theater was originally constructed as The Indiana Theater in 1922 by Harry P. Vanderschmitt. The first movie shown at the theater was The Storm, which starred House Peters and Virginia Valley. A band called Carmichael’s Collegians, led by Bloomington native Hoagy Carmichael would perform between films.
The theater was built in the Spanish mission revival architectural style and had a seating capacity of 616. Locals refer to the venue as the “Indiana Theater” or the “Bus-Chum.” In 1933, the theater burned almost completely to the ground and was rebuilt by the Vandershmitts.

Many prominent citizens contributed to its restoration, and it reopened as the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The theater, which still sports a red neon marquee that says “Indiana” has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
