Consisting of Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and G Hastings, the trio signed to the Los Angeles-based indie label Anticon in 2012 and released two mixtapes, Tape One and Tape Two, by the end of 2013. The latter of the two mixtapes went on to win the Scottish Album of the Year award.
Following the group's first successes, they signed to Big Dada and released their debut album, Dead, in 2014. The debut reached #35 on the UK Albums Chart and won the coveted Mercury Prize, an award given for the best album released in the UK. The trio provided six tracks for the soundtrack album of the film T2 Trainspotting, including “Only God Knows” which director Danny Boyle describes as the heartbeat of the entire film. In early 2018, they released their third studio album, Cocoa Sugar, which expanded their reach to new countries, entering the U.S. Heatseekers chart for the first time at #14.
