Born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, Will Hoge grew up listening to the massive record collection owned by his father and uncle. These early sounds became the foundation for his musical career, even though that wasn’t his initial choice. At Western Kentucky University, Will originally planned to become a history teacher and a basketball coach. However, when he started writing music, he decided that he really wanted to become a musician, so he left college and set out on his journey.
Early on, Will was a member of the band Spoonful in the mid-1990s, and even though they released an album, they didn’t get picked up and eventually separated. Will used some songs from that album in his later works where they found success. He performed as a solo act with guitarist Dan Baird, touring all over the South. His first independently released album, Live At The Exit/In, was a live set at a Nashville club featuring a unique sound that quickly gained attention and enabled Will to later release his first studio album, Carousel.
Atlantic Records approached him and he signed a deal with them in 2002, allowing Carousel to be released again to a bigger audience. In 2003, Blackbird On A Lonely Wire hit the market, showcasing a cleaner sound. Due to poor promotion, Will got a release from his contract and moved on to more touring and live albums that he released himself. Several years later, he joined with Rykodisc Records to produce three more albums.
Besides touring and working in the studio, Will has also appeared on the CBS Early Show, playing “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” and on the flood relief program Music City Keep On Playin’ in May 2010. Will’s song “Washed By the Water” was the closing number of the show.
