The band's hard rock nihilism helped pave the way for punk but they split in 1972 amidst a cloud of drug problems with Kramer later imprisoned for two years for selling cocaine.
Upon his release in 1977 he played with Johnny Thunders and featured on the debut album by New York R&B group Was (Not Was) whilst producing records for a number of punk bands, including shock rocker GG Allin. Kramer disappeared from the music industry for several years, but returned in 1995 with debut solo album The Hard Stuff, a typically rowdy but contemplative record featuring The Melvins, Claw Hammer and The Vandals.
Follow-ups Dangerous Madness (1996) and Citizen Wayne (1998) failed to make much of an impact but he continued to record for his own MuscleTone label and compose soundtracks for television and films, including Talledega Nights.
